IRIS FBR Complete Guide 2026: Login, Register & File Your Tax Return in Pakistan
Updated June 2026 · 8 min read · By TaxCopilot
IRIS is FBR's official online portal for filing income tax returns, registering for NTN, checking your Active Taxpayer List (ATL) status, and paying taxes in Pakistan. If you need to deal with FBR digitally, IRIS is where you do it.
This guide covers everything — from first-time registration to filing your return and fixing the most common errors. FBR recently upgraded to IRIS 2.0, so some screens look different from older guides you may have seen.
In this guide:
1. What is IRIS FBR?
IRIS stands for Integrated Revenue Information System — the Federal Board of Revenue's official digital platform for all income tax related tasks in Pakistan. It replaced the old manual and e.FBR systems and is now the single portal for individuals, salaried employees, freelancers, business owners, and companies.
The latest version, IRIS 2.0, launched in 2025 with a redesigned interface. The official URL is iris.fbr.gov.pk. Do not use any other URL — only the official FBR domain is safe.
2. What Can You Do on IRIS?
IRIS is a one-stop portal for all FBR interactions:
- File income tax returns — for individuals, salaried persons, and companies
- Register for NTN — get your National Tax Number online
- Check ATL status — verify if you are on the Active Taxpayer List
- Pay taxes online — generate a challan and pay via bank or online banking
- View and respond to FBR notices
- File wealth statements
- Section 7E property tax declarations
- Withholding tax (WHT) statements for businesses
3. How to Register on IRIS for the First Time
If you have never filed a tax return before, you need to register first. For individuals, your CNIC acts as your NTN/registration number — you do not need a separate NTN.
What you need before you start:
- Your valid CNIC number
- A mobile number registered against your CNIC (for OTP)
- An active email address
Steps:
- Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk
- Click "Registration for Unregistered Person"
- Enter your CNIC number (without dashes)
- Verify via OTP sent to your registered mobile number
- Fill in your personal details — name, address, employment type
- Set a password for your IRIS account
- Submit — your NTN is generated immediately
4. How to Login to IRIS FBR
Once registered, login is straightforward:
- Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk
- Click "Taxpayer Login"
- Enter your CNIC (without dashes) as your username
- Enter your IRIS password
- Complete the captcha and click Login
Forgot password? Click "Forgot Password" on the login screen and verify via your registered mobile OTP. Make sure the mobile number linked to your CNIC is accessible — if you've changed numbers, visit your nearest RTO to update it.
⚠️ Security warning
Never share your IRIS password or OTP with anyone — including tax agents or consultants. FBR will never ask for your password. Sharing credentials can result in your account being misused.
5. How to File Your Income Tax Return on IRIS
Documents to prepare:
- CNIC / NTN login credentials
- Salary certificate or annual income summary (for salaried employees)
- Withholding tax (WHT) certificate from your employer or bank
- Bank statements (for interest income, if any)
- Details of any other income sources
- Asset and liability details (for the wealth statement)
Filing steps:
- Login to IRIS at iris.fbr.gov.pk
- From the left panel, click "Declaration"
- Select "Income Tax Return" and choose the correct tax year
- Select the applicable return form shown by IRIS for your taxpayer profile (for example, salaried or business)
- Fill in your income details — salary, business income, freelance, rental, etc.
- Enter deductions and tax credits (employer WHT, advance tax paid)
- Complete the Wealth Statement — assets and liabilities as of June 30
- Review the summary and submit
- Save your acknowledgement receipt (IRIS generates a PDF)
The filing window for Tax Year 2026 (income earned July 2025 – June 2026) typically opens in July 2026. Check fbr.gov.pk for the official deadline announcement.
6. How to Check Your ATL Status on IRIS
The Active Taxpayer List (ATL) is FBR's list of people who have filed their income tax return. Being on the ATL gives you lower withholding tax rates on banking transactions, property purchases, and vehicle purchases.
Three ways to check your ATL status:
- IRIS portal — login and your ATL status is shown on your profile dashboard
- SMS — send your CNIC number to 9966. You'll get an instant reply with your status
- FBR website — visit fbr.gov.pk → Online Services → ATL Check
7. How to Pay Taxes Through IRIS
If you have a tax balance due (after subtracting WHT already deducted), you need to pay before or at the time of filing.
- Login to IRIS
- Go to Payment → Create Payment
- Select the payment type (income tax, advance tax, ATL surcharge, etc.)
- Enter the amount and generate a PSID (Payment Slip ID)
- Pay via any of: internet banking, mobile banking app, bank branch, or ATM
- Save your CPR (Computerized Payment Receipt) — you need this to link the payment to your return
Most major Pakistani banks support FBR e-payments including HBL, MCB, UBL, Meezan, and others.
8. Common IRIS Errors and How to Fix Them
❌ Can't login — wrong credentials
✅ Enter CNIC without dashes or spaces. If you've forgotten your password, use 'Forgot Password' and verify via OTP to your registered mobile.
❌ OTP not received
✅ Make sure the mobile number registered with NADRA is active. If you changed numbers, visit your nearest RTO to update it in the system.
❌ Return not submitting
✅ Ensure your Wealth Statement is also complete — IRIS will not accept an income tax return without a wealth statement. Check all mandatory fields are filled.
❌ Wrong tax year selected
✅ Tax Year 2026 = income earned from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. Double-check before submitting — returns for the wrong year are difficult to reverse.
❌ Payment not reflecting
✅ Wait 1–2 business days after payment for PSID to update. If it still doesn't reflect, call FBR helpline at 051-111-772-772 with your CPR number.
❌ IRIS 2.0 portal is slow/not loading
✅ Clear your browser cache and try Chrome or Edge. Avoid peak hours (12pm–3pm PKT) when the portal is most congested. Disable VPN if active.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between IRIS, e.FBR, and eFBR?
They all refer to FBR's online portal. IRIS is the current system (now IRIS 2.0). e.FBR and eFBR were older names for the same portal. The URL is iris.fbr.gov.pk.
Do I need an NTN to file on IRIS?
For individuals, your CNIC is your NTN. You do not need a separate 7-digit NTN unless you are registering a business, AOP, or company.
Can I file my return on mobile?
Yes. IRIS 2.0 is mobile-responsive. FBR also has an app, though the full return experience is better on desktop. Complex returns (wealth statements, business income) are easier on a computer.
What is the FBR helpline number?
FBR helpline: 051-111-772-772. Available Monday–Friday during business hours. For email support: helpline@fbr.gov.pk.
What happens if I file my return late?
Late filing penalties apply under section 182 and are linked to your tax payable (not a flat PKR 1,000/day): generally 0.1% per day, subject to legal caps/minimums, with special minimum relief for certain salaried taxpayers. Non-filers also face higher withholding tax rates on many banking, property, and vehicle transactions.
Can I file for previous tax years on IRIS?
Yes. IRIS allows filing for previous tax years. Go to Declaration → Income Tax Return and select the relevant year from the dropdown.
